Ford Keast LLP - More Than Just Your Traditional Accounting Firm
This episode is an important and difficult discussion about grief including the impact it can have on our careers. When Courtney was in her early twenties, her mom, Lois, died suddenly. Courtney had to find her way to the other side of this traumatic life event. Grief forces us to approach life situations differently and Courtney knew she had to reframe her thinking and evaluate how she saw her life moving forward. For Courtney, running was her safe place. The escape she felt while running and then through cycling, helped her to get through. Courtney’s determination, passion and resilience were defining pillars in the creation of LOST Cycle–a safe space to move, feel and escape. Lois continues to be an important part of the script, but the movie that is Courtney’s life continues to be shaped and defined by her resilience, her zest for life, and her full-on heart. “So I bought a book and taught myself how to program.” After deciding a career in Tech was for her, Claire Revell made it happen. She rose to be the Director & CEO of Intellek, an international e.Learning company with its head office in the U. K. Intellek offers Learning Management Systems (LMS) and e.Learning programs to firms in the U. S., Canada, Europe, and South Africa. More recently, Intellek is adding a focus on training the learner in the live environment. Claire advocates for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths); she also has built her philanthropic organization, Opening Doors, based on her love of South Africa. "Do what you love". Although cliché, it is easier to thrive when you are passionate about what you are doing. It changes how you look at your world. Abby has always loved accounting and although her journey and career path has not been straight forward, she has found her way back to the accounting discipline. On this week’s episode of Career Resilience with Jann Danyluk, Abby Acham and Jann discuss Abby’s impressive career path so far. A defining moment in high school set Abby apart when she opted out of the gifted program and was sent to her ancestral home, Antigua. This shift in environment allowed her the opportunity to reflect and grow both personally and in her career. Abby is also a cannabis and mental health advocate and an integral part of the organization, Afro Canada Budsistas. Their mandate is to normalize the cannabis plant for black women. The experiences black people have with cannabis, pre- and post-legalization, is not the same as other ethnicities. "At a later stage, I got out of my comfort zone and made the decision to start over and change my life". Alisya was born, raised and educated in Turkey where she became a Commercial Lawyer for a large firm in Istanbul. She moved to London to get her Masters in Law and made the decision to continue her career in the UK. She currently works for a Venture Builder firm assisting their clients in the legal aspects of their companies. While living in Turkey she acted as a volunteer attorney by night to young protestors and was a commercial lawyer during the day. "It's not so much about the job, but about the experience, take what you can and learn from those around you". Alisya's resilience is shown through her experience and dedication to change - both in her profession and career.
